A clean, whole, and safe city, even during the holidays. Thats what we all want, right? Therefore, the municipality does a few things differently regarding waste around the New Year. A collection campaign for Christmas trees is also organized again.

Many waste bins and neighborhood containers are closed during the holidays. We do this for everyones safety and also to prevent damage caused by fireworks:

  • On December 31 and January 1, some containers for residual waste, paper, and textiles are closed. All GFE containers are also closed then. They reopen on January 2. Dispose of your waste on time or keep it at home until January 2.
  • Between December 16 and 31, smaller street bins are closed. They reopen on January 4. In shopping areas, these bins are closed from December 28 to January 2. Take your waste home with you.
  • Household containers are not emptied on December 25 and 26 and January 1. The garbage truck comes a day earlier or later, between 6:30 AM and 10:00 PM. Check in the Afvalwijzer app via mijnafvalwijzer.nl which day the garbage truck will come to you. Keep your waste at home until that day.
  • From December 15 to January 2, the 130 bread bins in the city are temporarily placed indoors. We do not collect old bread during this time. Keep the bread at home or throw it in the GFE container. If there is no GFE container near you, throw it in the residual waste container.
  • Bulk waste or mattress collection: Between December 22 and January 4, there is less availability to make an appointment for bulk waste collection. Make an appointment for bulk waste collection before or after this period, or bring your bulk waste yourself for free to one of the environmental parks. See: rotterdam.nl/grofvuil. Environmental Parks and Bicycle Point

On December 24 and 31, the environmental parks and Bicycle Point are open until 3:00 PM. On December 25 and 26 and January 1, all environmental parks and Bicycle Point are closed. Help the cleaners and garbage collectors

In December, especially around the holidays, there is always more waste. Our garbage collectors and cleaners work extra hard to keep Rotterdam clean. Help them by disposing of your waste properly. Throw waste in the container, not next to it. This keeps your neighborhood clean and prevents fines. If the container is full, walk to another container or temporarily take the garbage bag back home.

Christmas Tree Drop-off

From December 27, you can drop off or dispose of your Christmas tree.
Drop-off is possible at various locations on January 3, 7, and 10. You receive 50 euro cents per tree.

On the page Christmas Trees. Link opens an external page you can read more about the drop-off locations and times per neighborhood.

Drop off your Christmas tree at another time?

Between December 27 and January 31, the municipality collects your Christmas tree separately from other waste. Place your tree:

  • 1 meter next to the plate of your neighborhood container (not on it!).
  • At the spot where you normally place your household container.

Important!

Drop off your Christmas tree or place it on the street without decorations. Only then can we process the Christmas trees into compost or wood chips.

Not on New Years Eve

Do not place your Christmas tree on the street on New Years Eve or New Years Day. This prevents it from being set on fire.

When it freezes, we first spread grit on the streets. Then collecting waste and Christmas trees may take longer.
