Put on sturdy shoes and explore the neighborhood! The CultuurWerkplaats Tarwewijk has mapped out 4 walks. Which celebrities lived here? What is the story behind the sculptures in the area? You will hear it along the way.
Download the podcast walks from the CultuurWerkplaats website and get a new perspective on the neighborhood. Important places, famous people, and historical events all come by.
Each tour starts at the CultuurWerkplaats on Cillershoekstraat. On the Streets and Stories walk, you will hear how the area looked before, during, and after World War II. And what are the stories behind the large photos on Rijsoordstraat? There is, among others, a stop at Moerkerkestraat, where actress Joke Bruijs was born.
Heavy port work
The port walk takes you through the origin and development of the Maashaven. The walk passes many sculptures in the area. Like The Dijkwerkers from 1970: 2 bent men lifting a basalt block together. It reminds of the hard work in the port.
Or choose the route along celebrities. From singer Kees Korbijn, known for sea shanties and folk songs, to writer and poet Cor Vaandrager who grew up on Brielselaan. The flat on Dordtselaan is also famous. It was the model for the book Pluk van de Pletteflat by Annie M.G. Schmidt.
With the art route, you walk past sculptures in the neighborhood, such as City Walk, a man and a woman each on a pillar at Zuidplein. And the monument The Falling Rider, which reminds of the horrors of war.
Meeting place
The walks were created by Robert Tau. He is involved with the CultuurWerkplaats, a meeting place for the neighborhood in a former school building. Cultural activities and courses are organized there. Those with questions about administration can go to the Buurtloket. Residents can work in the woodworking shop. And in the community garden, which is also open to everyone.
