The renovation of the new Zuidplein station hall was celebrated on Wednesday. Work has been ongoing since summer in and around the metro station, but construction has now officially started.
Zuidplein is the busiest metro station in Rotterdam-South. Thousands of travelers use it daily for transfers or when heading to Rotterdam Ahoy, Ikazia Hospital, or Rotterdam Swimming Center.
The metro station is outdated. Because more travelers are expected in the future, it needs to be renovated. A modern hall with eateries and shops will be built. The hall will be at street level beneath the metro station.
The station will also have the largest bicycle parking facility in Rotterdam-South, with space for 973 bicycles, cargo bikes, and scooters. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Pile painted
The construction is an important step in the Hart van Zuid area development. To celebrate this milestone, children were able to paint a pile on Wednesday. It was then symbolically driven in. Alderman Chantal Zeegers (Building and Housing) officially inaugurated the construction of the new hall.
Zeegers: With the new station hall, we make Zuidplein more than just a transit place. Light, openness, and liveliness ensure that people feel more comfortable and safer here. A place where you not only arrive and depart but where traveling, meeting, and staying naturally come together.
Hart van Zuid
Hart van Zuid. Link opens an external page is the area around the Zuidplein shopping center and Rotterdam Ahoy. It is set to become the vibrant city heart of Rotterdam-South. Therefore, since 2016, a complete transformation of the area has been underway.
Since 2018, there is the new Rotterdam Swimming Center, with a 50-meter pool. This was followed by the opening of the new Theater Zuidplein with a branch of the Rotterdam Library. And the Rotterdam Ahoy Convention Centre, an expansion of the existing Ahoy for congresses and meetings.
In 2022, the new bus station and the Zuidplein shopping center were added. In 2023, the outdoor space was completely redesigned, and the Ibis Hotel opposite Ahoy opened its doors.
Besides the new station hall, new homes and a cinema are now being developed.
