A place where children build huts, sail with rafts, and roast something tasty by the campfire, right in the city: De Speeldernis is the natural playground of Rotterdam. With the Giant Treehouse, this green oasis becomes even more adventurous. On Friday, April 25, Alderman Faouzi Achbar (Welfare, Living Together, Sports, and Digital Inclusion) will open the structure, which was made possible with funds from CityLab010.
The natural playground De Speeldernis has had its own play equipment in the form of trees, water, and stones for over 20 years. This challenges children to climb, run, build, and carry, to get dirty and to scrape their knees – all those things that come with being a child.
Giant Treehouse
The newest addition, a 10-meter high treehouse, is made from reused mooring poles from the Port of Rotterdam. This so-called Giant Treehouse is a unique place to play and climb among the treetops.
Classroom in the Air
Carolien Ruigrok, director of De Speeldernis: ‘Thanks to the innovative design, De Speeldernis has literally gained space. On the climbing tower, a deck has been constructed with an indoor area that we can use as a classroom in the air. Everything has been built without harming the existing nature in De Speeldernis.’
Thanks to climbing nets between the trunks, children can climb from one trunk to another. In the third trunk, there is a staircase leading up to a spacious cabin and a terrace overlooking the play water and the greenery of De Speeldernis. The cabin also serves as the classroom where nature lessons are given.
Starting Saturday, April 26, the Giant Treehouse will be open to everyone. For more information about the natural playground, visit the website: Natural Playground De Speeldernis - Rotterdam. Link opens an external page
