No fewer than 910 Rotterdam residents have registered to commit themselves to their neighborhood as neighborhood or village council members in the coming years. Half of them registered in a personal capacity and the other half on behalf of a group or political party. There are enough registrations to form a neighborhood or village council in all areas of Rotterdam.
The municipal elections will be held on March 18. In addition, Rotterdam residents can vote for one of the 37 neighborhood councils or 2 village councils of Rotterdam. People who want to become neighborhood or village council members could register from December 1 to January 19.
District alderman Robert Simons is pleased with the large number of registrations: It is great to see that so many Rotterdam residents want to commit themselves to their neighborhood. Neighborhood and village councils play an important role in strengthening democracy close to home. They ensure that ideas, concerns and initiatives from residents reach the municipality directly and are translated into action. That this leads to enough candidates to form neighborhood or village councils in all areas of Rotterdam is very good news for the city. It shows that Rotterdam residents are involved and want to take responsibility for their neighborhood.
Verification and final list
In the previous neighborhood and village council elections in 2022, a total of 620 Rotterdam residents registered. Of these, 57% did so without being a member of a political party or other organization.
In the coming days, all registrations will be checked for completeness and correctness. The Central Electoral Committee of the municipality of Rotterdam will decide on January 23 on the validity of the registrations. On January 30, the order of the lists on the ballot paper will be drawn. After that, it will be definitively known who the candidates are for the neighborhood and village council elections.
