The number of people owning electric cars is increasing. This is good news as air quality in the city improves and CO2 emissions decrease. In Rotterdam, everyone should be able to charge easily, whenever and wherever needed.

Therefore, the municipality will start a new charging strategy on January 1. The idea of this new strategy is that users can charge at any time, in an easy way. And the electricity grid should be burdened as little as possible.

More charging stations on the street

There are already more than 3,600 (public) charging stations in Rotterdam that people can use. In the coming years, the municipality of Rotterdam will place even more charging stations on the street. From January 1, the municipality will place charging stations based on usage data, which they call data-driven placement. This means looking at the usage of the charging network and where there is a shortage of charging stations. This is combined with the expected increase of electric vehicles in a certain area. Based on that, a charging station will be placed.

Participate in choosing a charging station

Data-driven placement also means that from January 1, 2026, Rotterdam residents can no longer request a charging station. This does not apply to people with, for example, a disabled parking permit registered on their license plate. The municipality finds it important that placement happens in the right location.

Therefore, we ask residents to think along about the proposed locations in your neighborhood. Locations have already been proposed based on data. The municipality wants to know how residents feel about this. Residents can leave their opinion about a future charging station via this website. Link opens an external page. With the help of this charging station map, you can see where the locations are currently proposed.

By working together with residents, the municipality ensures that the expansion of charging stations fits as well as possible with the wishes and needs of the neighborhood and fits within the public space.
