A play area where children learn about technology. Or a walking route that only becomes visible when it rains. These are examples of special plans that receive support from the Municipality of Rotterdam through CityLab010.
In 2024, 137 plans were submitted. Of these, 26 initiators now receive a start budget to actually implement their idea. In total, the municipality makes 1 million euros available for this purpose. With this money, as well as advice and assistance from experts, the initiators can get started.
‘This year again, there are great initiatives that make Rotterdam more beautiful, stronger, and more innovative,’ responds Alderman Simons, responsible for the topics of Port, Economy, Hospitality, and Governance (neighborhoods and small cores). ‘As an alderman, I am proud of the creativity and energy of our residents. With CityLab010, we give these planners the push they need to realize their ideas. I hope this inspires others to take action as well. Rotterdam is full of talent and good ideas — together we are building the city of tomorrow!’
Some plans are:
- The WasteCrab by Beynos: The WasteCrab picks up litter in places where it is currently necessary to do so manually. This applies to many places in the city.
- The Play Factory: In this play workshop in Rotterdam-South, children aged 5 to 12 get to know technology in a playful way. Without regard to background or language level, they discover the world of making and experimenting here.
- Rainwalks: This project develops walking routes that are only visible after a rain shower thanks to luminescent paint.
Curious about all 26 plans? On May 6, the jury report will be published on CityLab010.nl, explaining each idea. Here . Link opens an external pageyou can read that.
Presentation Evening
On Thursday, May 22, the 26 selected initiators will present their plans during a special evening at OASE Rotterdam. Everyone is welcome to come and watch, listen, and get inspired. Alderman Robert Simons, the City Jury, and partners of CityLab010 will also be there.
