The former Provimi building next to Fenix, the migration art museum, will be transformed over the coming years into the largest dance venue in the Netherlands: the Dance House.

Alderman Chantal Zeegers (Climate, Building and Housing) handed over the key to the old animal feed factory to Droom en Daad on Wednesday, February 4. The philanthropic foundation will build a unique collective building here over the coming years with various stages, dance studios, an exhibition space, and a dance hall with views over the city.

The Dance House is dedicated to all forms of dance, for all ages and levels. From classical to salsa, from tango to urban. Rotterdam dance companies, individual dancers, and visitors will all be able to use this 8,000m2 building with 4 floors.

The renovation of the old factory is being carried out by MAD Architects from China - the same architectural firm responsible for the adjacent Fenix museum.

Artwork

Wall of Dance is the first commissioned artwork for the Dance House. It consists of 64 new photos of Dutch dancers of all ages, styles, and levels. The life-size photos have been on display since February 4 for 5 years as a 160-meter-long installation around the construction site of the Dance House. It is thus the largest artwork in the Netherlands.

The photos were taken by internationally renowned artist and photographer Paul Kooiker. Work by the Rotterdam-born artist can be seen in Boijmans Van Beuningen and Museum Voorlinden. He also photographs for Vanity Fair, New York Times, and Vogue – as well as brands like Hermès and Louis Vuitton.

The Dance House is expected to open in 2030.
