Starting Friday, August 22, the closed part of the Meent between Rodezand and Westewagenstraat will reopen to traffic. On that day, all fences and green bins will be removed.

The Meent had been partially closed since July to reduce traffic nuisance. Since construction work on Westewagenstraat starts on August 25, the Meent must be completely open to all traffic.

Nice Lively Place

The road closure was a pilot by the municipality, called The Green Oasis. The aim was to reduce so-called show traffic. These are cars and motorcycles that accelerate hard with loud exhausts and loud music, causing a lot of nuisance.

The pilot was a success. In addition to the closure, tree and plant boxes were placed. This allowed Rotterdammers to enjoy a nice, lively place with cozy terraces surrounded by greenery. A different suitable location is being sought for the plant boxes. The trees were on loan and will return to the Arboretum Trompenburg.

The pilot was initiated by the Business Investment Zone (BIZ) Meent Rotterdam, the neighborhood council Cool Scheepvaartkwartier Stadsdriehoek, and the residents.

Evaluating the Pilot

The municipality will evaluate how the pilot has performed in the coming period. Both visitors and residents and entrepreneurs can share their experiences by participating in a survey. Depending on the outcomes, it will be decided whether and in what form the Green Oasis will return this year or next year. Enforcement officers and the police will continue to monitor traffic nuisance at the site.
