On the night of August 26 to 27, orange light will shine on the Wereldmuseum and the P+R Noorderhelling. This is an action to draw attention to violence against women. The Municipality of Rotterdam joins other organizations for the action #righttothenight.
On the night of August 26 to 27, the Wereldmuseum on Willemskade and the P+R Noorderhelling in IJsselmonde will be illuminated in orange. With this action, the Municipality of Rotterdam emphasizes that every woman has the right to walk safely at night.
The action follows a week after the death of 17-year-old Lisa. She was violently killed last week while biking home after a night out. With the campaign Right to the Night, individuals and organizations across the country are raising awareness about violence against women, for example after going out.
The color orange
With the orange lights, the municipality draws attention to violence against women. The United Nations uses the color orange as a symbol for a future without violence against women. Orange stands for a new day.
Deputy and Night Mayor
Deputy Mayor Tim Versnel believes it should be normal for women in Rotterdam to walk safely after a night out. Violence against women must stop. As a municipality, we want to show that we fully support the message of the campaign Right to the Night. Therefore, the city will turn orange tonight.
The facade of the Maassilo will also be illuminated in orange tonight. The Rotterdam nightlife supports the action as well. After enjoying the nightclubs in Rotterdam, it should be a given that you can come home without worries, says Night Mayor Thys Boer of N8W8 Rdam. Link opens an external page. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Women have the right to the night, and we must all work towards that.
Also outside Rotterdam
Also in other places in the Netherlands, facades of nightlife venues and other buildings are illuminated in orange. Among others, the town hall of Haarlem, the provincial house of North Holland, and the ADAM tower in Amsterdam will be illuminated in orange from Tuesday to Wednesday.
The orange lighting at the Wereldmuseum and the P+R Noorderhelling will burn from 10:00 PM Tuesday evening until 4:00 AM Wednesday morning.
