The action followed a week after the death of 17-year-old Lisa. She was violently killed last week while biking home after a night out. With the Right to the Night campaign, individuals and organizations across the country are now calling attention to violence against women, especially after a night out.

The Color Orange

With the orange lights, the municipality drew attention to violence against women. The United Nations uses the color orange as a symbol for a future without violence against women. Orange represents a new day when women can walk safely after a night out.

Deputy and Night Mayor

Deputy Mayor Tim Versnel believes it should be normal for women in Rotterdam to walk safely after a night out. Violence against women must stop. As a municipality, we wanted to show that we fully support the message of the campaign Right to the Night. Thats why the city lit up orange last night.

The facade of the Maassilo was also illuminated orange last night. The Rotterdam nightlife supports the action as well. After an evening enjoying the nightclubs in Rotterdam, it should be a given that you can come home without worries, said Night Mayor Thys Boer of N8W8 Rdam. Link opens an external page. Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Women have the right to the night, and we all need to work towards that.

Also Outside Rotterdam

Other places in the Netherlands also illuminated the facades of entertainment venues and other buildings in orange. Among others, the town hall of Haarlem, the provincial house of North Holland, and the ADAM tower in Amsterdam were lit orange from Tuesday to Wednesday.

The orange lighting in Rotterdam burned from 10:00 PM on Tuesday evening until 4:00 AM on Wednesday morning.

It happens more often that Rotterdam buildings are illuminated orange. Earlier, this was the case during Orange The World in November. Link opens an external page. November 25 is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
