Since June 2025, the municipality has adjusted the speed limit in 115 streets. What is the status in different parts of the city and what is the progress of the work?
Wherever the speed limit is reduced from 50 to 30 kilometers per hour, this results in calmer traffic and fewer accidents.
- Completed: Rozenburg, Charlois and Hoek van Holland.
- In progress: Hillegersberg-Schiebroek, Centrum, Delfshaven, Hoogvliet and Feijenoord.
- Starting in 2026: IJsselmonde, Kralingen-Crooswijk, Noord, Overschie and Prins Alexander. In these areas, traffic signs, speed bumps and clear road markings will be installed on streets that become 30 km per hour.

Hoogvliet
In Hoogvliet, the municipality coordinates the work with the Aveling-Zuid project. This avoids extra nuisance. The work affects traffic, so it takes longer here. This change is implemented step by step like the others. Other nearby works are also taken into account. This limits nuisance and keeps the city accessible.
Information for residents
Residents receive a letter about 3 weeks before the work starts. It explains what will happen and when. More information per neighborhood can be found on the website rads.rotterdam.nl. Link opens an external page. This website contains all projects of the Municipality of Rotterdam.
Flexible speed cameras
Since December 18, the first so-called flexible speed camera for 30 km per hour is located on Walenburgerweg. The camera checks if cars and motorcycles are speeding. Drivers receive a fine if they exceed the speed limit. The camera stays 2 to 3 months in one place and then moves to another street. The camera not only helps tackle speeding but also provides insight into street safety.
Traffic nuisance approach
The flexible speed camera is one of 28 measures from the Rotterdam Traffic Nuisance Approach 2.0. This is a broad approach for the whole city because nuisance occurs in many places. In consultation with neighborhood councils, municipal enforcers, police or the Public Prosecution Service, it is continuously assessed which measures are useful and necessary.
