In Rotterdam, increasingly more streets have a maximum speed of 30 kilometers per hour. This greatly reduces the chance of accidents compared to a speed of 50 km/h. In Hillegersberg-Schiebroek and Rozenburg, the streets have now been adjusted, with other neighborhoods to follow.
At 30 km/h, the braking distance is much shorter than at 50 km/h. This is one of the reasons why fewer accidents occur at a maximum speed of 30 km/h. Therefore, the municipality of Rotterdam is adjusting the speed limit on a total of 115 streets.
Signs and speed bumps
After Hillegersberg-Schiebroek and Rozenburg, it is now the turn of Centrum, Charlois, Delfshaven, Feijenoord, Hoek van Holland, and Hoogvliet-Noord. From early October to late November, the municipality will be working here. New signs, speed bumps, and clear markings and lines on the road will be installed. Residents in and around the streets that are being adjusted will receive a letter at least 3 weeks in advance.
Minimizing inconvenience
The adjustments will take place in phases to minimize inconvenience and keep the city accessible. Some streets and neighborhoods will be adjusted later to better align with the work of other projects. This also helps reduce inconvenience. This applies, for example, to Hoogvliet-Zuid, Kralingen-Crooswijk, Prins Alexander, and Rotterdam-Noord.
Cheerful parade
To raise awareness for traffic safety, a cheerful parade took place through Hillegersberg on September 17. Alderman Pascal Lansink-Bastemeijer went out on the street with schoolchildren, parents, seniors, and entrepreneurs from the neighborhood. ‘By lowering the speed, we ensure that children can safely go to school, that seniors can move comfortably through their neighborhood, and that everyone can pay better attention to each other in traffic. Ultimately, we do this for all Rotterdammers,’ said the alderman.
Drawing contest
To make young children in Rotterdam more aware of traffic safety, the municipality is organizing a drawing contest. Children can draw their best and most creative ideas for a safe street. The best submission will get a special place in the city.
