Since Friday, January 2, it has been snowing continuously in ’s-Hertogenbosch. Our gritting service and contractors are continuously busy gritting, shoveling, and brushing roads and bike paths. If necessary, they work day and night.
Main routes first
Our focus is on the main routes for cars, cyclists, and pedestrians. On these routes, we apply the maximum salt dosage. There are 8 car routes, 9 bike routes, and 1 pedestrian route (between the city center and the station). These routes consist of main roads, bus routes, through roads, and access routes for emergency services.

Driving one full round takes 3 to 5 hours, depending on the weather. With continuous snow, roads and bike paths can become covered and slippery shortly after gritting. Therefore, pay close attention and avoid unnecessary travel.
When do we grit other roads?
We only grit secondary roads, neighborhood access roads, and industrial areas once the main routes are passable. We only grit these during daytime on working days. With heavy snow, these roads may not be gritted at all because all capacity is needed for the main routes.
Enough salt
We always have enough salt in stock for two winters. Since it is still early in the season, little has been used. Despite gritting at maximum capacity now, the stock is more than sufficient.
Waste collection temporarily adjusted
Due to snow and slipperiness, the Waste Collection Service temporarily adjusts its services. This is done for the safety of employees and other road users. In recent days, collection has been scaled down and adjusted. Not all containers could be emptied.
Due to frozen waste and low volumes, no fruit, vegetable, and garden waste and food scraps (FVG+E) are currently collected. Collection trucks depart later in the day and drivers decide which routes are safely passable.
Decisions on whether to drive are made daily based on the weather forecast. For Wednesday, January 7, it was decided not to drive; the environmental stations also remain closed. Where possible, crane trucks empty underground containers that are almost full early to limit additional placements and nuisance.
On Thursday, January 8, the Waste Collection Service will resume services as much as possible. We do our best to collect residual waste, PBD (plastic), and old paper as much as possible. Routes may be adjusted and a route may (partially) not be driven.
Since the winter weather continues for a while, it is not yet clear if and when catch-up routes are possible. Capacity is limited at this time, also due to the collection of Christmas trees scheduled to start on January 7.
For the latest updates, keep an eye on the website, app, and social media channels of the Waste Collection Service.
