In May this year, an earlier design of the Parkring was presented during the Binnenstad information market. This design aimed to maximize greening of the Cityring into the Parkring. After many reactions from the city about preserving trees, we revisited the design together.
This spring there was a beautiful plan for a green design of the new Parkring, with many trees. But most of the current trees would have to be cut down first. This caused much protest. We listened, went back to the table, and revised the plans. In this new plan, we can save a total of 75 trees, and these trees can truly grow old. The new plan also provides for planting about 205 additional trees and creating much greenery. The plan is thus better and more balanced. We greatly appreciate the efforts of the planting teams and the Zinloos Geveld action group. This process has yielded a valuable result, says Rik Grashoff (alderman for public space development).
Optimal Greening
In the first design, we wanted to green the area as much as possible. This required removing 135 trees and planting 288 new ones. Together with stakeholders, the design was carefully reviewed over the past months. By repositioning lanes and green spaces, it became possible to preserve a large part of the existing trees. At the same time, much of the quality of the earlier design was maintained. In the new design, we choose optimal greening. We remove 76 trees, preserve 75, and plant 205 new trees. Over the coming years, we will transform the Cityring with 151 trees into a green Parkring with a total of 280 trees.
