The municipality is adjusting the rules for advertising in public spaces, such as bus shelters and free-standing advertising displays. The goal is to ensure advertising better fits a healthy, sustainable, and attractive city.

The municipal council decided this on Monday, December 15. The new policy applies from 2025 to 2035.

Why new rules?

The current policy is more than ten years old. Much has changed in that time. The municipality finds it important that outdoor advertising not only generates revenue but also contributes to a pleasant living environment. Advertising influences what people buy and do. Therefore, we choose rules that contribute to health and sustainability.

What will change?

  • No advertising for fossil fuels, meat, fish, gambling, and alcohol
These ads will gradually disappear. First in new contracts, later completely. This limits advertisings contribution to climate change or unhealthy choices.

  • Research into unhealthy food
Within five years, we will consider whether ads for unhealthy food should also be banned.

  • Digital advertising is allowed, but rules will apply
Digital boards are permitted, but we monitor light nuisance and traffic safety.

  • Sustainable materials
Advertising boards must be made as much as possible from circular and reusable materials.

What does this mean for Tilburg?

We want to be a municipality that is healthy and sustainable. Almost half of Tilburg residents do not want advertising for unhealthy or environmentally harmful products. With these rules, we take a step together towards a better living environment.

When will this take effect?

The new rules apply as soon as existing contracts expire, mainly from 2032 onwards. We keep residents informed of the steps.
