Municipality, educational institutions, housing corporations, and student organizations jointly commit to sufficient, suitable, and affordable student housing. Today, they signed the new Tilburg Student Housing Covenant 2025–2030.

In addition to the municipality, Tilburg University, Fontys, Avans, housing corporations, and student organizations signed. With this agreement, the covenant partners commit to continue working in the coming years to provide a future-proof, affordable, and suitable supply of student housing in the city as a follow-up to the previous covenant.

The new covenant aims to better align the supply and demand of student housing. The covenant takes effect immediately and runs until December 31, 2029. The partners will annually monitor developments in supply and demand, progress of construction projects, and the need for new locations and housing types together. The goal is to develop concrete construction plans for 800 units by 2030.

Why this covenant?

Tilburg will continue to grow as a knowledge city in the coming years, increasing the demand for affordable and good housing for students. The covenant includes agreements on forecasts and targets, plan development, cooperation in the Knowledge Quarter, and promoting affordability and livability in neighborhoods with student housing.

The covenant also addresses the important contribution of students to a vital, livable, and attractive city and the regional implementation of the national Student Housing Action Plan 2022–2030.

Alderman Yusuf Çelik – Housing: “Tilburg is growing as a knowledge city and students are indispensable in this. With this covenant, we take joint responsibility to realize sufficient affordable and suitable housing. This provides students with a solid foundation, keeps our neighborhoods vital, and keeps our city attractive for everyone who wants to study and live here.”

Tilburg University is an important partner in urban development and sees the covenant as a confirmation of the joint task to offer students a warm welcome and a solid foundation during their study period in Tilburg. Wilma de Koning, Vice Chair of the Executive Board Tilburg University: “Students deserve the chance for a study period where they can grow, study, and flourish. Suitable housing is part of that, especially in a knowledge city like Tilburg. With the agreements in the new covenant, we each take responsibility to make that possible.”

Rob Donninger, director at SSH: Our focus is on building rooms and buildings with shared facilities because we see this positively contributes to student well-being. We are pleased to make this possible with our covenant partners and also contribute to solving the shortage of rooms for students.”
