In the public spaces of our city and villages, there are approximately 105,000 trees. Trees in the forests are not included in this count. It is necessary to replace trees annually, for example, because they are in poor condition or have been damaged too much by storms and pose a risk. Our principle is that every tree we must remove is replaced by a new tree. This is important for people, animals, and the environment.
Preparation
Planting trees requires careful preparation. First, we check if there are cables and pipes underground and which tree species best fit the environment. Also, whether the tree has enough nutrients and space to grow without problems. Not all trees we remove can be replaced by a new one in the same spot. For example, if there are already many trees in one place, the chance that a young tree will thrive there is very small. We then look for a suitable place nearby.
Getting started
In recent months, new, spacious growing places have been created in many locations within the municipality. Contractors idverde and Boomrooierij Weijtmans/Van Wijlen B.V. have started planting the trees. This will continue until about mid-March 2026.

The municipality manages and maintains the trees. Curious about how we do this? You can read more on the page Trees.
