On December 13, the final meeting of the Tilburg Citizens Assembly took place. Over 120 Tilburg residents have spent months intensively discussing how to make the energy transition fair.
The Tilburg Citizens Assembly was the first citizen assembly in Tilburg. Participants were randomly selected and together form a good reflection of the city. In 5 meetings, under the guidance of an independent organization, they learned from experts. They engaged in discussions and voted on recommendations. The focus was always on understanding each other, being open to other opinions, and seeking what unites us. Together, they defined what social justice means.
Together
The energy transition means that we gradually switch to cleaner and more sustainable energy. It is not only about technology but also about how residents, businesses, and the municipality tackle this together. It involves choices in and around homes, how people adjust their behavior, and how neighborhoods can collaborate.
Appreciation
Alderman Çelik: “As alderman, I greatly appreciate the willingness of Rachid, Truus, Marinella, Leon, Aishwarya, and all the other participants to share personal stories and jointly seek a shared recommendation. The openness, genuine curiosity, and commitment show how powerful collaboration can be. This joint recommendation is not only a great result but also proof of the power of listening and working together.”
Final Meeting
At the final meeting, the recommendations were finalized and put to a vote. Finally, the recommendations were symbolically handed over to the municipal government, and the Tilburg Citizens Assembly was celebrated. The municipal council agreed beforehand to generally adopt the recommendations unless this is legally or practically impossible. In that case, they motivate why this is not possible.
What Next?
In the coming months, the municipal government will examine how the recommendations can be implemented. Ultimately, the municipal council will decide in spring 2026. Several participants from the Tilburg Citizens Assembly will closely monitor the decision-making process. They will also ensure that the recommendations are actually implemented.
