Preparations for the construction of the Victoria residential tower are now also visible at Pieter Vreedeplein. Since January 2026, work has already been underway on the site itself. From Monday, February 23, work started on the square itself.
This makes the construction of the Victoria residential tower now truly visible in the city center. After construction, the square will receive a green, accessible, and pleasant new design in consultation with the surroundings.
What will happen?
A large part of Pieter Vreedeplein will temporarily become a construction site because construction will start in March. Almost the entire square is located above a parking garage. Therefore, heavy construction traffic can only drive over the narrow strip where trees once stood. To create enough safe space for the construction site, we are temporarily adjusting the square and the surrounding traffic. The following changes will take place:
- We are removing obstacles such as benches and lampposts.
- We have removed ten trees. We prefer not to remove trees, but this was necessary to create a safe construction site and routes. In the same area, at least 10 new trees will be planted after construction to compensate for the removed trees according to the tree ordinance.
- We are removing the blue parking spaces. New bicycle parking spaces will be added at the intersection of Van Delfthof and Telegraafstraat. Additionally, cyclists can as always use the parking under Pieter Vreedeplein or under the Heuvel.
- All shops and horeca remain accessible at all times via a safe pedestrian route across the square along the construction site.
- We are creating temporary detour routes for cyclists around the square via Ijzerstraat and Telegraafstraat.
- The traffic situation for car traffic will temporarily change to ensure safe traffic flow. For example, the exit from Heuvelring to the Pieter Vreedeplein garage will no longer be possible. Furthermore, the roundabout at the entrance of the Pieter Vreede garage will change into a normal priority intersection. Additionally, Telegraafstraat will be closed at the entrance of the parking garage with bollards and from Willem II street it will be one-way traffic.
Future-proof city center
Tilburg is greening and building a future-proof city center. The new Victoria residential tower with 130 apartments, 281 m2 of commercial space, and a greener design of Pieter Vreedeplein contribute to this. In 2026, the municipality will continue discussions with residents, horeca, and entrepreneurs around the square. Together we will create a final design for the new public space. Important starting points are: more greenery, good accessibility of shops, and a pleasant square to stay.
