The works on the Amsterdamsestraatweg are almost completed. A total of over 30,000 m² of the street has been renewed, of which more than 10,000 m² asphalt and nearly 20,000 m² paving – good for about 1.4 million paving stones. In addition, almost 4,400 meters of sewerage have been replaced and in the autumn the last of the 116 new trees will be planted, with sufficient underground growth space. In total, the municipality has added almost five times as much greenery as before the renovation, about 2,500 m² more.

On October 4, entrepreneurs from the Amsterdamsestraatweg are organizing the opening party Eg Utregs, with food stalls, workshops, childrens activities, and music. The party is freely accessible to everyone.

Councilor Dennis de Vries: “I cycle every day over the Amsterdamsestraatweg to the city office, and have thus been able to see up close how much work has been done. We chose the shortest possible turnaround time; the contractor, the colleagues from the municipality, and many others have worked incredibly hard. The result is partly invisible: the sewer under the street has been completely renewed. But what is very visible, and which I have seen happen almost literally while cycling: how attractive the street has become. With much more greenery, more space for pedestrians, and better crossing places. The street is now decades ahead.”

Works

The work on the Amsterdamsestraatweg has proceeded according to plan. From early July, the road is open again in both directions, and at the end of August, the bike paths were paved. There are still some works to be done, such as planting the last trees and plants and addressing so-called completion points; shortcomings discovered after delivery, which must be repaired by the contractor.

De Vries: “We know it has not been an easy time for the neighborhood. Some entrepreneurs and residents have experienced quite a bit of inconvenience. With such a major project, we unfortunately cannot prevent that, but we have done everything we can to complete the work as well and as quickly as possible. I hope everyone is happy with the new Amsterdamsestraatweg; it has truly become a more pleasant residential and shopping area.”

Celebration

To celebrate the end of the works, entrepreneurs from the street are jointly organizing the street party Eg Utregs on Saturday, October 4. After the opening by the entrepreneurs and councilor De Vries at 1:00 PM, the festivities will start. Until 6:00 PM, there will be all sorts of activities between the Weerdsingel and Bethlehemweg: there will be workshops and childrens activities, there will be music and food stalls. The party offers all of Utrecht the opportunity to get acquainted with the renewed street; everyone is warmly welcome.
