Alderman Eelco Eerenberg has been nominated by D66 as State Secretary for Finance. The mayor and aldermens board will greatly miss Eerenberg. Mayor Sharon Dijksma: Eelco is an extremely collegial and pleasant colleague, a true bridge builder; his departure is without a doubt a big loss for our board. But these are exactly the qualities that are now urgently needed in The Hague. In that light, I fully understand this step and my colleagues and I wish Eelco all the success in the world. I am sure that his quality as a connecting leader will also be appreciated in The Hague.
It is not easy to write this letter. Because of course, a beautiful, honorable and exciting adventure awaits. But yes. Utrecht is such a wonderful city to govern together. That is why I say goodbye with a heavy heart. It is a great gift to work as an alderman with the Utrecht council, the board, the civil servants, all involved residents, organizations and entrepreneurs. In December 2019, Eelco joined the Utrecht board after serving nearly six years as alderman in Enschede on behalf of D66. After the 2022 municipal elections, he became responsible as alderman for the portfolios Spatial Planning, Education, Public Health, Drug Policy, Sex Work and was district alderman of Leidsche Rijn. He was also responsible for various spatial projects such as Groot Merwede, Stationsgebied and Rijnenburg.
