From today, Thursday, January 8 at 6 PM, all municipal indoor sports facilities in Utrecht are closed until at least Monday morning. This precautionary measure was taken by the municipality due to the enormous amount of snow and ice on the roofs and the expectation that the weight will increase further in the coming days due to frost and rain. The decision was made to ensure the safety of athletes, visitors, and staff.
The structures of the indoor sports facilities meet all building technical requirements and are safe to use under normal circumstances. Due to the combination of the amount of snow with the weather forecasts for the coming days (frost, rain), it is expected that the weight of the snow on the roofs will only increase. This may reach the limits of the weight the roof can bear. We take no risks in this situation. We will monitor the roofs in the coming days and the situation will be reviewed again on Monday. Therefore, the municipal indoor sports facilities will remain closed as a precaution until Monday morning.
The closure applies to all municipal sports halls, sports and gymnasiums, and swimming pools in the municipality of Utrecht. Users of these locations will be informed. We are investigating whether the weather conditions may have consequences for other municipal buildings.
The municipality assumes that every building owner is alert to the safety of their own building. Because it is not possible to check the municipal indoor sports facilities one by one at short notice, this preventive measure has been taken.
