Hogeschool Utrecht and the municipality of Utrecht enable children from families who are struggling financially to receive glasses if needed after an eye examination. The only condition is that the families reside in Utrecht and possess a U-pass.
Since childrens glasses are not included in the basic package, children from families facing financial difficulties risk not being able to obtain glasses, with all the consequences that entails. Not having glasses when needed can lead to lazy eye, squinting, or permanent visual impairment. This can hinder a childs participation in society and school, potentially leading to lower academic performance. Later, this can affect job market opportunities. The negative impact on a childs health can thus lead to poorer social and economic circumstances.
Investing in Children
In Utrecht, around 8000 children grow up in households with an income up to 125% of the legal social minimum. The municipality chooses to invest extra in these families and children. This is documented in the note ‘Equal Opportunities for a Secure Existence. The investment in childrens glasses for U-pass holders fits this aim.
To assist these families and children in accessing the right care, Hogeschool Utrecht and the municipality of Utrecht have joined forces. Children can undergo a free eye examination at the Orthoptics program of the HU. If it is determined that they need glasses, they will receive a free pair upon presentation of a U-pass, funded by the municipality. The HU has made arrangements with a glasses supplier and local opticians for this.
“At HU, we train students to become independent professionals through education and practical research. Even during their training, we strive to contribute to societal challenges. In Utrecht, there are significant health disparities. This collaboration is a great, concrete example of how we can make an impact on creating equal opportunities for health and well-being with our students, teachers, researchers, and partners.”, says Lizet van Ewijk, associate lector and one of the program leaders HEALTH&WELL at Hogeschool Utrecht.
Linda Voortman, alderman at the municipality of Utrecht: “Many families with children in Utrecht struggle to make ends meet. While we know that growing up in poverty has such an effect on health and opportunities in life. With this initiative, we hit three birds with one stone: we provide children with the care they deserve, we relieve parents who are financially struggling, and students get the chance to apply their studies in practice. A beautiful win-win-win that invests in equal opportunities.
