The Municipality of Utrecht has added two new electric ships to its fleet. Starting next week, these emission-free vessels will navigate the Utrecht canals to supply hospitality businesses in the city center. With this expansion, the city takes an important step towards a fully electric and sustainable fleet.

At the Weerdsluis, the ships were officially put into service today. Alderman Susanne Schilderman (Public Space) opened the lock and sailed into the city with one of the new ships.

Alderman Schilderman: “With these new electric ships, we take a big step towards a cleaner and livable city center. We focus on more transport over the water, which relieves the wharf cellars and reduces traffic congestion in the center. With these ships, we do that cleaner and quieter, and we can also supply the hospitality industry better.”

Towards a fully electric fleet

Since the 1980s, the Municipality of Utrecht has been supplying hospitality and collecting waste along the Oudegracht by ship. For the past fifteen years, this has largely been done electrically, with, among others, the Stroomboot (the Beer Boat) and the Ecoboot (waste boat). With the arrival of the two new ships, the municipality replaces the last diesel-powered supply boat and expands the fleet with an additional ship. Later this year, three smaller diesel ships will also be replaced, which are used to keep the surface water clean. This will bring the municipal fleet to eight fully electric ships that contribute to a cleaner city center and keeping the surface water clean.
