The sidewalk tile is a request to visitors and passersby to smoke elsewhere. Alderman Eelco Eerenberg (Public Health): “Smoking is a major health risk and the leading cause of illness and death in the Netherlands. Moreover, nicotine is highly addictive. With a sidewalk tile, residents and entrepreneurs in the city can kindly remind smokers that they cannot smoke there.” The tile is not an official smoking ban, but it is a clear signal.

Growing up smoke-free

That smoking and vaping are unhealthy is no longer a secret. Even secondhand smoke is unhealthy, even outdoors. Additionally, seeing smoking or vaping often leads people to do it themselves.

The municipality of Utrecht wants children in Utrecht to grow up without encountering smoke. And also that fewer young people start smoking or vaping themselves. The smoke-free zones are an important step towards the Smoke-Free Generation in 2035. In many places where children go, such as museums, school grounds, swimming pools, petting zoos, playgrounds, sports parks, and bus stops, smoking has long been prohibited in Utrecht.

The request for the smoke-free tile can be made via: Request smoke-free zone, sidewalk tile | Municipality of Utrecht.
