Lage Weide – the largest industrial and business park in Utrecht and one of the largest in the Netherlands – is given a clear direction for the future. Today, the Environmental Vision Lage Weide 2040 has been published: the course to make the area even more important for the growth of the city, the energy transition, and the shift to a circular economy.
Lage Weide plays a key role in the Utrecht economy, today and in the future. It is already the place that keeps Utrecht running: from waste processing and energy production to logistics, construction, repair, and technical services. For thousands of practically and technically trained people, the site is a place of work and livelihood. That role will only become more important in the coming years.
The vision focuses on three major changes: a stronger economic profile, an area better connected to the city, and a safer, more attractive, and greener work landscape. The ambition is to connect Lage Weide to the city with bicycle bridges over the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the A2, create more space for circular companies, make better use of water and rail, and create a climate-resilient public space. The Municipality of Utrecht has developed this course together with ILW (Industry Association Lage Weide), entrepreneurs, and other stakeholders.
Alderman Susanne Schilderman (economic affairs):
“Lage Weide is the engine room of Utrecht, located in the heart of the Netherlands. Here happens the work that keeps our growing, circular city running. This vision shows how we continue to provide space for companies that are essential for our energy supply, our construction task, and our circular ambitions. We do this not from behind the desk, but together with ILW and the entrepreneurs who shape the area every day.”
With the Environmental Vision, the Municipality of Utrecht wants, in close cooperation with ILW, to provide clarity to entrepreneurs and investors, and create space for the 4,000 additional jobs that Utrecht needs by 2040 for practically and technically trained people. By making the area greener, safer, and more accessible by bike, bus, water, and rail, Lage Weide should grow into a future-proof work landscape that is more strongly connected to the city.
Responding to the draft vision
The draft environmental vision is available for inspection from December 12 for six weeks, until January 22, 2026. Everyone can submit a viewpoint during this period. After processing the viewpoints, the final Environmental Vision will be submitted to the municipal council in the third quarter of 2026.
