In Zaanstad, everyone must feel safe on the street. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and anyone can experience intimidating behavior on the street. Therefore, the Municipality of Zaanstad, together with its partners, is committed to combating street harassment. This is done, among other things, through a campaign on Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. We use these social media platforms primarily to reach young people and young adults.

Examples of street harassment include hissing, whistling, following someone, and cornering them. Some people consider it harmless, but for others, it feels unpleasant or even threatening. So, it varies for everyone.

We do not accept street harassment

Through the social media campaign, we show that we do not accept street harassment. The campaign includes a series of short videos featuring local role models and influencers. Among others, Songül Mutluer, Lara Six, Kamal Qebayli, and Hesdy Gerges appear. They emphasize that street harassment is not normal and that bystanders can take action. Their message is: ‘Say NO. Don’t look away’.
