The initiative for the pumptrack comes from residents of Zwolle-Zuid. They want to create a pleasant outdoor sports, play, and meeting place because currently there are few attractive outdoor play and sports facilities for children and youth in the neighborhood. The goal is to build a track that is challenging for young and old, a pleasant and accessible outdoor sports area for all ages that can also be used by people with physical disabilities. In 2024, the city council approved this residents initiative.
In 2025, the initiators, with support from a project leader from the municipality, drew up a set of requirements including size and accessibility of the track, safety, wheelchair accessibility, and a (green) environment. Based on this, eleven possible locations in Zwolle-Zuid were explored. The expertise of a professional pumptrack builder was also involved.
Input from youth and community
Subsequently, the three most promising locations were presented to the residents of Zwolle Zuid and other interested parties. Neighbors of these locations, children, youth, and schools were invited by the initiators to think along during an open house and/or demonstration workshop about the most suitable location.
From this process, Ittersumpark emerged as the location that best fits the vision of the initiators: a green, spacious, and safe place, easily accessible and with sufficient distance from homes. Additionally, the park offers other possibilities to combine sports, play, and meeting in a pleasant way.
Support and attention to concerns
During the participation process, over 300 residents shared their opinions and preferences via a questionnaire. A majority expressed a preference for Ittersumpark. At the same time, residents also raised concerns about possible nuisance, noise, ecology, and parking pressure. These points of attention are taken into account in the follow-up process and, where possible, incorporated into the design and layout of the location. Neighbors and other interested parties are also invited to think along and observe during the design process.
Construction start in spring
When the city council agrees to Ittersumpark as the final location and the associated budget, the design process can start. The construction of the pumptrack is planned for spring 2026. Consideration will be given to nature values and the breeding season.
Investment in movement and meeting
For the realization of the pumptrack and the arrangement of the immediate surroundings, a credit of €450,000 is proposed. The annual management and capital costs can be covered within the previously made structural budget by the city council. The pumptrack contributes to a vital, healthy neighborhood and aligns with Zwolles ambitions in the areas of movement, meeting, and an attractive public space.
