The decision that consumer fireworks are no longer allowed to be lit in Zwolle was made by the city council. The council chooses a safe New Years Eve without consumer fireworks to reduce nuisance for people, animals, and the environment.
We understand this will take some getting used to, says Mayor Peter Snijders. That is why we find it important to offer a good alternative. The festive countdown moment is hopefully a beautiful first step towards a new tradition. I am already looking forward to seeing many Zwolle residents ring in the new year.
The arrival of a central event was a clear wish from residents. A professional fireworks show fits with a gradual change of New Years Eve, taking into account residents who would prefer to keep the fireworks tradition. At the same time, consideration has been given to the petting zoo in Park de Wezenlanden. The fireworks will be set off at a considerable distance, on the other side of the park.
Subsidy for Fireworks-Free Street and Neighborhood Initiatives
The municipality is happy to help start new traditions and bring neighbors closer together. Therefore, every resident of Zwolle can apply for a subsidy together with neighbors for a fun street or neighborhood activity. Think of a karaoke evening, silent disco, or a New Years dive. Applications can still be submitted throughout November via Subsidy for Fireworks-Free Street or Neighborhood Activity during New Years | Municipality of Zwolle. Snijders: Just like with the central celebration, we are building new traditions in our streets and neighborhoods.
How will you celebrate New Years from now on?
To better bring attention to the fireworks ban among residents, the municipality will start a campaign in November. The central question in the campaign is: how will you celebrate New Years from now on?
Safer New Years Eve with Less Injury
While the fireworks ban will be an adjustment for many residents, there are also many people who are very happy with the upcoming ban. Like Harry Achterberg, a doctor at the emergency department of Isala. He sees all kinds of misery every year. Think of burns on the face, eye injuries, amputated fingers. A ban will certainly contribute to fewer injuries. I just think many people will find it a pity, so its good that alternatives have been devised.
Report Nuisance
If you experience fireworks nuisance and there is a (life)dangerous situation, call the emergency number 112 immediately. For nuisance without immediate danger, you can call the police at 0900-8844. Nuisance you want to report but does not require same-day action can be reported to the municipality via the enforcement form.
