From Wednesday, December 24 until February 1, 2026, the COA rents several rooms in Hotel Lumen. Initially, this temporary emergency shelter will accommodate 32 unaccompanied minor refugees (amv). If the influx requires it, the number of young people temporarily housed may be increased to a maximum of 45.
The current influx in the Netherlands, the low outflow of asylum seekers from shelters, and the closure of several existing locations have caused COAs various shelters, especially in Zevenaar and Ter Apel, to be structurally overloaded. To prevent distressing situations, especially during this time of year, it is necessary to temporarily create additional shelter places. Renting rooms in Hotel Lumen relieves the pressure on regular shelters. Entrepreneurs in the vicinity of Hotel Lumen have already been informed by email.
Composition and Guidance
The group of young people who will temporarily live in Hotel Lumen from December 24 are minors who have applied for asylum in the Netherlands without adult accompaniment. These young people are also called amv’ers. More information about amv can be found at www.coa.nl/en/asylum-shelter-for-young-people-who-come-alone-to-the-netherlands. This group consists of boys aged 14 to just under 16 years old from various countries. The young people staying at the hotel are guided by youth workers from the COA and fall under the guardianship of the Nidos foundation.
