King Willem-Alexander and National Ombudsman Reinier van Zutphen visited the earthquake area today. They spoke in the community center in Zeerijp with a group of residents from the gas production area and complaint handlers of the National Ombudsman.

The residents previously sought help from the National Ombudsman because they were stuck in their contact with the government regarding damage handling and strengthening their homes. The King and ombudsman spoke with the residents about their concerns, how they experience government assistance, and what they need.

Loss of Trust

The consequences of gas extraction have a significant impact on the lives of residents in the area. They are, sometimes for years, in a difficult situation and lose trust in the government. The ombudsman sees powerlessness among many residents because they no longer believe their problems will truly be solved. Reinier van Zutphen: Today, residents also shared what they experience, their concerns, and how they cope with sometimes years of uncertainty. This deeply affects lives.

Keep Listening, Keep Talking

The ombudsman wants the government to take responsibility and offer serious recovery. Recovery also means being able to pick up your life again and having a future. Ask residents what they need to continue with their lives. Ensure they actually experience improvement, both short and long term. Keep listening to them and keep talking, even if it takes longer. Citizens have the right to a reliable government that is clear about what is and isnt possible and keeps its promises. I know very well that this call is not the first time I make it. And I will keep making it. Because the end is not yet in sight for everyone. In the coming years, residents will still be waiting, and new damage may occur due to the unstable ground caused by earthquakes like in Zeerijp. Recovery is not simply done.
