The position of vice-president will be vacant as of July 1, 2026. Vice-president Thom de Graaf announced last November (opens in a new window) (refers to another website) that he will stop as of that date.

The Law on the Council of State (opens in a new window) (refers to another website) describes the procedure for the nomination and appointment of the vice-president. The Ministers of the Interior and Kingdom Relations and Justice and Security make a nomination in the Council of Ministers. The Council of State is heard for the appointment of the vice-president. Unlike the appointment of state councillors, the Council of State itself does not make a recommendation.

It is expected that at the end of April it will be announced who the new vice-president of the Council of State will be.
