King and Princess Amalia at Special United Assembly on November 20 November 4, 2025 On Thursday, November 20, it will be eighty years since the States General first convened again after World War II. To commemorate this special event, a Special United Assembly of the House of Representatives and Senate will be held in the Grote Kerk in The Hague. King Willem-Alexander and Princess Amalia will attend the meeting. Eighty years of freedom have been celebrated in various ways in 2024 and 2025, including by members of the Royal House. The States General will conclude the commemorative year with this meeting. The Special United Assembly was originally planned for 2020, after 75 years of freedom, but was postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.Freedom and rule of lawDuring the meeting, there will be a reflection on the end of the war and the meaning of freedom in a time of conflict and polarization. Passing on the values of freedom and the rule of law to future generations is also a theme of the assembly.Temporary parliamentOn November 20, 1945, Queen Wilhelmina delivered the first post-war speech from the throne in the Ridderzaal, for a temporary parliament. During the war, parliament was suspended. Afterwards, the House of Representatives and Senate had convened separately.
