On Thursday, November 20, it was eighty years since the States General first reconvened after World War II. To commemorate this special event, there was again a Special United Assembly of the House of Representatives and Senate in the Grote Kerk in The Hague. King Willem-Alexander and Princess Amalia attended the meeting.
Eighty years of freedom were celebrated in various forms in 2024 and 2025, including by members of the Royal House. The States General concluded the commemorative year with this meeting. The Special United Assembly was originally planned for 2020, after 75 years of freedom, but was postponed due to the coronavirus crisis.
Personal stories
Chair Mei Li Vos of the Senate and Thom van Campen of the House of Representatives gave a joint speech. Members of Parliament shared personal stories about freedom. For example, MP Ulysse Ellian (VVD) said: “I fulfill this wonderful office from the deep conviction, based on my parents experiences, that freedom and security must be defended.” Two children, together with the Chairpersons, presented the Royal family with a special memento: a pin with the Fundamental Rights.
Temporary parliament
On November 20, 1945, Queen Wilhelmina delivered the first post-war speech from the throne in the Ridderzaal, for a temporary parliament. During the war, the parliament was suspended. Afterwards, the House of Representatives and Senate had convened separately. In May 1946, parliamentary elections were held again for the first time.
Chairperson
The Chairperson of the Senate always leads the joint meeting, such as on Prinsjesdag. A Special United Assembly can also take place for ceremonies such as the inauguration of a new King, the consideration of certain bills related to the Royal House, and in memory of members of the Royal House.
