On 18 December, the Temporary Committee on Fundamental Rights and Constitutional Review elected Member of Parliament Julian Bushoff (GroenLinks-PvdA) as its new chair. He took over the chairmanship from Joost Sneller (D66), who had been temporary chair since the elections on 29 October.
On 12 November 2025, the House of Representatives decided to continue the temporary committee. The Presidium, the daily board of the House of Representatives, advised this. Due to the cabinets resignation and the early elections, the period during which the committee could operate was limited to less than a year. Meanwhile, the committee stated in a letter to the House that the advice actively contributes to the desired strengthening of the Houses supervisory and co-legislative role, as it is specifically tailored to the House. “It is therefore reasonable that the House gives itself the opportunity to gain more experience with the advisory role of the temporary committee.”
Committee Tasks
The committee has two main tasks:
1. Advising the House members on the fundamental rights and constitutional aspects of bills, treaties, certain lower regulations, and legislative proposals from the EU. In these advices, the committee also pays attention to how the government has dealt with advice from the Council of State regarding fundamental rights or other constitutional objections.
2. Supporting the increase of knowledge and attention for fundamental rights and the Constitution among House members. The committee does this by informing members and initiating activities that can deepen this knowledge.
The committee has issued eleven advices so far. The extension applies for the duration of the current parliamentary period.
