The European Commission has proposed to extend protection for refugees from Ukraine by one more year. All European ministers of Justice and Home Affairs have agreed to the proposal to extend the Temporary Protection Directive (TPD) until March 4, 2027. The European Commission advises countries to cooperate as much as possible in preparing for the period after the TPD. The government also considers this important.

Voluntary Return

In addition, the government is developing a return program that helps refugees voluntarily return to Ukraine when possible. The government wants this return program to align with the reconstruction of Ukraine and will offer extra training and support to refugees within the return program. The program should be ready for use by refugees from Ukraine when it becomes possible to return sustainably to Ukraine.

Possible New Residence Permit for Refugees from Ukraine if Temporary Protection Ends

Not everyone can return at the same time. Therefore, the government is also exploring options for a new temporary residence permit for refugees from Ukraine if their temporary protection under the TPD ends. A so-called transit document could be the solution.
