Between December 9, 2024, and December 8, 2025, during internal border controls at the land borders with Belgium and Germany, 530 foreigners were denied entry to the Netherlands and 250 persons were arrested. The arrests were partly related to migration crimes such as document fraud and human smuggling.
Since July 28, 2025, internal border controls have also been conducted at airports. In total, up to September 8, 1500 airplanes were checked and 50 return decisions were imposed.
The KMar reported a decrease in the number of controls, border refusals, and arrests from September 9, 2025, to December 8, 2025. This decrease is partly due to shifts in personnel deployment of the KMar, among others because of the start of the implementation of the European Entry/Exit System (EES). The KMar aims to conduct as many controls in the next period as before.
Recently, Van Weel extended the controls until June 8, 2026. The internal border controls focus on combating irregular migration and cross-border crime.
A report on the internal border controls from December 9, 2024, to December 8, 2025, can be found on the websites of the Dutch government.
