The cabinet has established an approach since 2024 to better distribute national employment. It is still too early to identify significant changes, but the first steps have been taken. Figures from 2024 show that the Randstad has the largest growth in employment. The regional inequality between the Randstad and the rest of the country calls for action from the cabinet. Together with regional partners, the cabinet is working to improve this distribution.
Strengthening both the State and the Region
Agreements have been made within the cabinet whereby the Minister of Interior and Kingdom Relations has been given a stronger coordinating and advisory role to support ministers in their quest for a better distribution of their organizations. Opportunities for this are discussed together with the Kings Commissioners and mayors. This allows both the State and the region to strengthen each other, for example, in economic or social terms.
A good example of this is the agreements between BZK, Defense, the province of Drenthe, and the municipality of Assen regarding the future of the Johan Willem Friso Barracks. Here, work is being done on a national meeting center, educational institutions, and a central production kitchen on the barracks grounds.
