In 2023, Wijdemeren decided that merging is necessary to remain future-proof. Since 2024, the municipalities of Hilversum and Wijdemeren have been exploring collaboration opportunities. Residents, entrepreneurs, and the municipal administrations have become convinced that a light merger of the two municipalities has added value. This means that the municipality of Wijdemeren will be dissolved, and the municipal boundary of Hilversum will be changed so that the territory of Wijdemeren is added to that of Hilversum. The merger will create a strong municipality that has its services in order for its residents and can address societal challenges.
The Council of Ministers has agreed to send the draft bill for advice to the Council of State. The cabinet aims for the implementation of this merger by January 1, 2027.
