Netherlands and Indonesia Reach Agreement on the Return of Two Dutch Detainees
The Netherlands and Indonesia have reached an agreement on the return of two Dutch nationals who were detained in Indonesia for many years. The two detainees will soon be transferred back to the Netherlands. One is a 73-year-old Dutch citizen detained since 2008, and the other a 64-year-old detained since 2015, both for drug offenses. The Netherlands requested their return on humanitarian grounds. Minister of Foreign Affairs David van Weel and Indonesian Minister of Justice and Human Rights Prof. Yusril Ihza Mahendra signed an online agreement on Tuesday to formalize their return.
This agreement (MoU, Memorandum of Understanding) is the result of diplomatic efforts and good cooperation between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The Netherlands is very grateful to the Indonesian authorities for their cooperation and decision to allow the two detainees to return to the Netherlands on humanitarian grounds.
Once the final formalities are completed, it is expected that the two Dutch nationals will arrive in the Netherlands within two weeks. Staff from the Probation Service Netherlands (Bureau Buitenland) will assist them with their return.
