Prime Minister Schoof: ‘With a war on our continent, our security is no longer a given. It is therefore inevitable that we invest more in our own defense. The NATO alliance is indispensable in this regard. The Netherlands takes its responsibility.’
The NATO allies will continue discussions in the coming period about the precise definitions, the implementation of defense-related expenditures, and the desired timeline.
For the 2026 budget, a step has already been taken; the cabinet will spend 2.2% of GDP on defense next year, including support for Ukraine. It is up to a subsequent cabinet to implement the objective and always make an integral assessment in relation to other expenditures.
On Tuesday, June 17, the House of Representatives will debate with the Prime Minister, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Defense about the Netherlands commitment to the NATO summit. The Netherlands is hosting the summit, which will take place on June 24 and 25 in The Hague.
