The mission was already completed for the soldiers who are on their way to the Netherlands. The other part of the 145-strong company from the 11th Airborne Brigade is still providing so-called Force Protection in Baghdad during the NATO Mission Iraq (NMI). They transport and secure NATO advisors, who advise the Iraqi government on how to properly organize its defense and security apparatus. The goal is to strengthen stability and security in Iraq.
Monitoring
The departure of the remaining contingent of Red Berets in Iraq follows the completion of their mission. Defence constantly monitors the current threat and takes action based on that information. Defence maintains contact with the soldiers and their families.
The Netherlands makes a significant contribution to NMI. Last year, in addition to the airborne company, a Chinook detachment from the air force was also deployed. Moreover, there were Dutch advisors, staff officers, and Lieutenant General Cas Schreurs served as Force Commander of the mission for a year. A French colleague recently took over that role.
