The threat from Russia and global unrest is increasing. NATO warns of a possible military conflict within a few years. To prevent this, the Netherlands is investing heavily in the armed forces. The Spring Memorandum mentioned the cabinets decision to invest over € 1 billion extra in Defence.
The money is necessary because European allies, including the Netherlands, must take more responsibility in military matters. It is also important to deploy them more quickly and over a longer period.
Combat Power and Drones
To provide the necessary contribution to NATO, € 425 million is being invested in combat power. Therefore, the army is establishing an additional armored infantry battalion, equipped with combat vehicles and all necessary resources such as air defense. Investments are also being made in real estate and digitalization.
Furthermore, € 125 million is intended for combat support with drones and their countermeasures. Drones now play a crucial role in modern warfare. Defence is therefore acquiring more attack drones, reconnaissance systems, and means of protection against drone attacks.
Longer Operational Deployment
Defence allocates € 83 million to sustain operational deployment for a longer period. With the Defence Memorandum 2024, significant investments have already been made in operational support, such as transport and the medical chain. This is now being further strengthened.
Scalable Armed Forces
The Netherlands needs a larger and scalable armed force. This is important to contribute more to NATO and take responsibility for national tasks in times of rising tensions. Therefore, € 80 million is being invested in scaling up the armed forces and in personnel and training.
For currency adjustments, wage adjustments, and maintaining plans, € 420 million has been reserved. The money for rising costs and exchange rates is to prevent Defence from making concessions on the quality or quantity of equipment. Regarding wage adjustments, Defence takes into account expected market developments and compensation for military and civilian personnel.
