“The stories I heard today make a deep impression,” says the minister. “I see it in the eyes of the Ukrainians I spoke with: they are fighting for their country and risking everything. When I speak to these people myself, it stays with me. It is also quite intense for our soldiers, but it is very meaningful to be able to train these Ukrainians and increase their effectiveness and chances on the battlefield. This way, we continue to support Ukraine unwaveringly. There is not only a need for weapons, but also for trained soldiers. And that is exactly what we do in Operation Interflex.”
Investment in Our Own Security
Brekelmans continues: “We not only have the moral responsibility to continue our support, but it is also an investment in our own security. I am convinced that Russia poses a threat to all of Europe, and therefore also to the Netherlands. The stronger Russia stands in Ukraine, the greater this threat.”
In Trenches and Urban Areas
Currently, nearly 90 Dutch army soldiers from the 13th Light Brigade are involved in training Ukrainian colleagues who will soon go to the front. The training lasts 7 weeks. The Ukrainians receive lessons to bring their shooting skills to the highest possible level. Furthermore, it involves tactical training, weaponry, medical care lessons, and humanitarian law of war. They train in trenches and urban areas. Additionally, they learn to deal with explosives and cyber threats. Working under the threat of drones is also an important part of the training.
The minister spoke with instructors and Ukrainian soldiers. The stories about the daily reality in the war zone are moving. Instructors build a bond with the Ukrainians in a short time. Hearing from new recruits that previously trained soldiers have now been killed is not easy for them.
Brekelmans: “What happens here in seven weeks is incredibly intensive. This places a great responsibility on our soldiers. I am incredibly proud of their professionalism and dedication. Thanks to them, Ukraine can continue to defend itself and withstand the ongoing Russian aggression.”
From 5 to 7 Weeks
The training program led by the United Kingdom is the largest individual military training mission for Ukrainian soldiers. The Netherlands has been providing instructors primarily from the 13th Light Brigade, but also from the Marine Corps since late 2022. Since January of this year, the training has been extended from 5 to 7 weeks. This increases the survival chances at the front.
Operation Interflex is multinational. In addition to the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, New Zealand, Norway, and Sweden also contribute.
