In his comprehensive response to the report, Brekelmans again expresses his condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the deceased and injured soldiers. According to him, the accident should never have happened. “We learn from what went wrong and are highly motivated to ensure that the safety of our soldiers and staff is better guaranteed now and in the future.”

Lessons Learned from Mortar Accident in Mali
Defence endorses all conclusions and recommendations from the Den Oudsten Committee report on the 2016 mortar accident in Mali. The report enables Defence to learn and improve. The ministry has already made many changes since the accident and will continue to do so. Minister Ruben Brekelmans announced this today in a comprehensive policy response to the House of Representatives.
