The security situation in Europe requires action. The defence ministers agree that successful deterrence and defence are crucial right now. They need to invest significantly to meet the new capacity objectives, including in military equipment. The Netherlands is already taking significant steps with increases in the defence budget.
The defence industry was also discussed. The Netherlands agreed during the DMM on the public version of an action plan to expand production capacity within NATO countries. The Netherlands contributes to this with a new strategy for industry and innovation. Recently, the Defport platform has also been launched. This collaboration between government and industry stimulates accelerated innovation and production of military equipment.
International Agreements
In addition, three agreements were signed. These concerned the intention to jointly develop and acquire the infantry fighting vehicle Combat Vehicle 90 with several European countries, as well as to assist Ukraine with CV-90 equipment. It also involved the cross-border use of airspace. Training areas are being established for NATO exercises.
Furthermore, Brekelmans signed an agreement with his Ukrainian counterpart Umerov to expand cooperation with the defence industry in Ukraine. From now on, procurement can be done more quickly and efficiently there.
Support for Ukraine
One day earlier, the Ukraine Defence Contact Group (UDCG) met. The Netherlands announced there a new maritime support package. This consists of more than 100 fast patrol boats and military vessels for special operations. It also includes more than 50 sea drones. The Netherlands continues to provide military support to Ukraine unabated.
