Defence is purchasing the Tomahawks from the American manufacturer Raytheon. This specific cruise missile is the only one that can be fired using the launch system of the LC frigates. The Tomahawk has a range of over 1,000 kilometers. Defence will receive the first examples in 2028.
Development of Weapon System
For the strike capability from the yet-to-be-built submarines, Defence is participating in the development of a weapon system. Several European countries are collaborating under the leadership of Spain. This so-called ‘Joint Strike Missile – Submarine Launched’ meets all requirements. An additional advantage is the possible involvement of Dutch knowledge institutions and industry. According to the current schedule, the production of the system will be ready in time to integrate it into the new Orka-class submarines in 2032.
Old Submarines
Contrary to previous plans, Defence has decided not to equip the current old Walrus-class submarines with additional strike power. This is due to the remaining lifespan of the boats and the time required to acquire and integrate a new weapon system.
