Minister Brekelmans: “The Netherlands provides advanced capabilities for layered air defense. This way, we protect the logistical supply to Ukraine, defend NATO’s eastern flank, and also enhance our own readiness. It is one of the first times we deploy this combination of systems simultaneously. We show Russia that attacking this hub is pointless. This strengthens the security of Poland, Ukraine, NATO, and the Netherlands.”
The Dutch contribution focuses on an integrated unit of three different capabilities. Besides the two Patriots, there is a NASAMS air defense system and anti-drone systems. Together with partners, the Netherlands provides layered air defense. This is deployed against potential threats from ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, fighter jets, helicopters, and drones.
Various NATO countries rotate in protecting the logistics center. Before the Netherlands, Germany was active with some of the aforementioned air defense capabilities. NATO still has to decide which country will take over after June 1, 2026.
NSATU coordinates and facilitates training of Ukrainian soldiers and provides military support to the country. Military equipment donated by NATO countries to Ukraine must safely reach its destination. Dutch air defense enables NSATU to carry out these logistics activities safely.
Deployment of F-35s
Previously, the Netherlands protected Polish airspace with the deployment of F35 fighter jets. This F35 detachment is now standing down. Together with Norwegian colleagues, the Netherlands guarded NATO airspace from September 1, 2025, to December 1, 2025. This deployment was also intended to deter Russia and protect military equipment going to Ukraine.
