Both countries intend to improve the effectiveness of their maritime forces. They are also determined to continue countering Russian aggression at sea and to support Ukraine in its defense.
Belgium and the Netherlands have long been partners in supporting international stability, peace, and security.
Strength of Maritime Relationship
They collaborate not only through NATO, the European Union (EU), and the United Nations (UN). The success of the Admiral Benelux also demonstrates the strength of the maritime relationship between the two countries.
There are several examples of successful cooperation between the two countries. Consider the joint procurement of Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) frigates from Damen Shipyards. Another example is the joint procurement of minehunters.
Mapping Wishes
Belgium and the Netherlands aim to jointly acquire more maritime equipment and align their efforts. Furthermore, there is a desire to strengthen the technological and economic foundation through collaboration with industry. The Belgian company FN Herstal can contribute significantly, particularly in the area of unmanned systems. Additionally, Belgium has a large munitions factory that the Netherlands can utilize more, as the minister noted. Conversely, Belgium can focus on drones produced by VDL in the Netherlands.
In all cases, national interests, regulations, and existing obligations are taken into account. Equally important is research and innovation. In this regard, the Netherlands and Belgium strive for joint initiatives, particularly around technology.
